Top Ten Tuesday: Things That Make Me Love a Character

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and now hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl, wherein each week bloggers list out their Top Ten.

Ah, this topic is fun – the character traits I love in my favorite characters! Most of these traits are indicative of my own personality, as well as what I aspire to be, so take from that what you will, lol.

Fierceness

I love when a character shows a strong sense of self, a willingness to pursue their ideals, to be sure and confident of themselves. Vulnerability is also to be expected, of course, but a core of steel is what I seek most in a character.

Sass

I love a character who has a sense of humor, and especially who is ready with witty comments and snarky asides. Sure, this is a trait most commonly associated with love interests, but I love if the narrator I’m seeing the story through is humorous – it makes for more engaging storytelling

Softness

I mean, this is pretty much straight-forward. A character who has a soft side will instantly be liked by me, especially if the soft side is directed towards an animal companion; that is my kryptonite.

Dark side

I know I went like full 180 from the previous trait, but listen, a sharp edge to a character balances them out well. It can be something simple, like irrational pettiness or selfishness, or something more complex like an ambition that makes them morally ambiguous. I love characters that have teeth on their personality.

Chaotic nature

Look, the absolute disasters sometimes make the most interesting characters and I will love and defend them with my every breath.

Nerdiness

First of all, nerds are so in. Plus, they are more likely to give solutions. Also, being passionate about something is an attractive trait.

Which traits do you love in a character?
