Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and now hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl, wherein each week bloggers list out their Top Ten.
This week’s topic was quite interesting – characters whose jobs I wish I had, whether it is because the job itself is interesting, or because of the co-workers or boss. As you can see, about half of these involve some sort of research job because that is what I would like to do, in any world haha.
The manager of the restaurant at the top of Carew Tower in The Hollows
I would love to be there whenever Rachel Morgan is having a dinner reservation at the restaurant, if only because it is quite eventful whenever she pops in there! Oh to be a fly on the wall when magical shit is going down! Also that revolving restaurant thing sounds interesting and I want to see that? (I mean, yeah I still could, in theory, but it would be a different experience while also dodging sleepy potion balls)
Michelle Nguyen’s intern at Dark Owl Records in Welcome to Night Vale
Look I love her, music snobbery aside, and well, it would fall to me to actually sell the music here. I would hate interacting with customers, but I would take one for the team if it meant hanging out with Michelle.
Garak in Snow White with the Red Hair
I would take any herbalist’s job, really, but Garak is the head of the royal herbalists and she gets to be weird and do her own thing, research wise, so it sounds perfect. The herbalists in this series are also botanists/doctors/researchers and honestly all of that sounds right up my alley. Plus the clothing in this series is ridiculously cute!
Amena from The Murderbot Diaries
I would love to be any member of the Preservations Aux, to be honest, but Amena’s job as a young researcher genuinely sounds exactly my thing.
Roger Malory from The Raven Cycle
Be a quirky historian? Check! Spend weekends going to pigeon shows? Check! Luckily stumble upon finds of the century when on holidays? Double check.
Franky from Spy x Family
Close enough to be a spy but not having to do any field work, Franky is mainly an informant who is occasionally roped in by Anya on her ‘missions’. Honestly would love this job, plus I would get to meet Agent Twilight regularly, and even see Yor on occassion.
Tané from The Priory of the Orange Tree
Be a member of the High Sea Guard? Be a dragon’s rider? Yes to all (even if I have a fear of heights)
Greer from My Contrary Mary
Apprentice to Nostradamus himself, and also sort of interning under Aristotle’s directions, but also enough distance from the royal family. While the jobs in a historical setting sound dreadful, in this instance I would like it.
Titania from Celestial trilogy
Who wouldn’t want to be a powerful sentient spaceship?
Walther Davies from October Daye
A chemistry professor/alchemist, he is a frequent helper to Toby, and honestly a research job where the side benefits are to be a support for the main character, and also invent new stuff for the fae sounds like a dream.
Which character’s jobs would you love?
Being a powerful sentient spaceship would be very neat!
My post: https://lydiaschoch.com/top-ten-tuesday-characters-whose-job-i-wish-i-had/
Great list! Being a dragon rider would be so neat!
Great post!! I’d most likely be terrible at it, but I like the idea of being a herbalist and I’m interested by a book about a dragon rider. I like your take on the ttt – I was pretty stuck but in the end I went for a quiz on jobs from fantasy books. See how many you get! https://hundredsandthousandsofbooks.blog/2021/03/02/ttt-guess-the-fantasy-jobs-but-they-get-more-and-more-obscure/
Ahh thoses are quite interesting!! I would definately love being Herbalist too.
First in mind, is Nell from At first Sight by Hannah Sunderland — working in a mental healthline « crisis » callcenter! Sure it’s heavy on you at times.. but i’d love to help people like me..
next- Sophie from First in by Danika Bloom — A volunteer firefighter (because hell Im not strong enough to be a career one 😂)
