Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku, Vol. 2Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku, Vol. 2 by Yuji Kaku
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Even an invincible ninja may not be able to survive Hell’s Paradise!

Gabimaru the Hollow is one of the most vicious ninja assassins ever to come out of the village of Iwagakure. He’s ruthlessly efficient, but a betrayal results in him being handed a death sentence. There is only one hope: travel to a long-hidden island and recover an elixir that will make the shogun immortal and he will regain his freedom. Failure is not an option—on this island, Heaven and Hell are a hair’s breadth away.

Warnings: graphic violence, gore and body horror; mass killings

We are introduced to yet more of the characters, as Gabimaru and Sagiri form an alliance with the kunoichi Yuzuriha, who is walking around with two watchers (one from another prisoner who she killed), and it is an uneasy one, with her trying to playfully sway Gabimaru with her charms. She hides a much more ruthless nature, of course, as evidenced by the fact that she is willing to experiment with the island’s weird flora. Meanwhile, we get to see two other pairs, one of two brothers as a watcher-prisoner, and another where the watcher is trying to protect the kid who was also sent as a convict. The core group tries to understand whether it is truly a paradise, and if yes, where would they find the elixir. The brothers come across a pair of beings on the island, who are annoyed at seeing the humans there. And the watcher and the kid find out that the waters around the island trap them there in a sea of shipwrecks. The island seems to have more mysteries that just flora that infects and transforms humans, and I am so interested in seeing where it goes!

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Viz Media LLC, via Edelweiss.
