ARC Review: The Way of the Househusband, Vol. 1 by Kousuke Oono

The Way of the Househusband, Vol. 1The Way of the Househusband, Vol. 1 by Kousuke Oono
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A former yakuza legend leaves it all behind to become your everyday househusband. But it’s not easy to walk away from the gangster life, and what should be mundane household tasks are anything but!

He was the fiercest member of the yakuza, a man who left countless underworld legends in his wake. They called him “the Immortal Dragon.” But one day he walked away from it all to walk another path—the path of the househusband! The curtain rises on this cozy yakuza comedy!

This hilarious, laugh-out-loud gag comedy about a reformed yakuza gangster was a delightful addition to my day. The concept is simple – a yakuza legend leaves his old life, and becomes a househusband and the jokes are about him not realizing how intimidating he still is. His approach to his duties is much the same as his previous life, so he is intense about things we consider mundane and therein lies most of the laughs. There are shots of him looking intimidating juxtaposed with him being so adorably domestic, it is funny and cute! Then there are the reactions of his former acquaintances, his adorable wife (I need the story of how they got together ASAP) who is a designer, his cute cat, and his day to day duties as a house husband.

My favorite scenes were with the Roomba, because that goes delightful wrong in the most perfect ways. Then there is the dishonest knife salesman who gets the fright of his life, while Tatsu tests out his wares and makes him a meal. Even him rushing after his wife to give her the lunch she forgot is suffused with humor, as he is stopped by the police who he then proceeds to bribe with a coupon. But probably the most funny was when he ropes in some former rivals to participate in a sale for him, then proceeds to berate them over the slim pickings, much in the style of a mob boss. And the adorable part is when he hunts down his wife’s favorite show’s DVD for her birthday, as well as cheers her up with an extremely cute apron – now that is a devoted husband!

The only issue I have is that the jokes keep me like ‘wait what happened next?’ as the story moves on further. As invested I already am in the series, I hope some future volume comes up with the story of how they met because I am so interested. It was also hinted that she found him at the incident that made him a legend, so I wanna see how they got from there to here. As for this volume, just pick it up to see how funny it is, as my descriptions can’t do it justice.
