Welcome to 2018 & Readathoning in January

Welcome to 2018! Ah, despite how cynical a person I am, I can’t help but feel that rush of hope and eagerness when the new year rolls around. And I am so happy to leave behind 2017. 2018 doesn’t look much promising for me, on a personal level (I will *hopefully* get my PhD this year and I am so afraid I might not) but you gotta keep believing that things will be better, right?

Now, personally, I don’t hold much belief in New Year resolutions (I think if you want something to change, you can make the change anytime – you don’t need to wait for a new year to come around) so all I can say to followers is that you can keep expecting

  • more reviews from me,
  • maybe more frequent non-review content, and
  • I am working towards making my reading more inclusive (thinking of including notes for representation and diversity at the end of a review) and
  • safe for my readers (if you noticed, since the last several weeks, I have been adding trigger and content warnings to almost every review now).

I hope everyone’s new year is delightful and filled with good stuff. We all deserve a better year for ourselves and for humanity as a whole!

Moving on the read-a-thon portion of this post, this month I will be participating in 3 main reading challenges/readathons – January Jam Jar (which is a month-long reading challenge), Bout of Books (week-long) and 24in48 (2-day).

January Jam Jar
January Jam Jar

Hosted by Kathy @ Books & Munches, this challenge is devoted to 2017 TBRs. Put your TBR in a jar, and read accordingly! The rules, according to Kathy

◊ Post a blogpost saying you’ll be joining me by putting all your 2017 TBR’s in a jar and deciding your next read that way!
◊ Share your list of books that you’ll be putting in the jar and pull out one or two books already.
◊ If you’re sharing your updates on social media, use #JanJamJar so we can follow up on each other!

Obviously I didn’t get to read all the books I had planned to in 2017, but there are 10 main ones that I was so eager for and did not end up reading. It’s a bit of a challenge because I am a mood reader and rarely like reading randomly, so let’s see.

Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer, #1) Wonder Woman: Warbringer (DC Icons, #1) Defy the Stars (Constellation, #1) Blacksouls (Blackhearts, #2) Midnight Jewel (The Glittering Court, #2) Lord of Shadows (The Dark Artifices, #2) The Crown's Fate (The Crown's Game, #2) A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3) Rosemarked (Rosemarked #1) One Dark Throne (Three Dark Crowns, #2)

Bout of Books 21

Bout of BooksOkay I think this may be my seventh bout of books, and I am just as excited to this as every time. This time, I am setting the challenge at 7 books. Rough TBR for this time (6 books set and 1 possibly from the jam jar):

Tess of the Road Poison's Kiss (Poison's Kiss, #1) Poison's Cage (Poison's Kiss #2) Truly Devious (Truly Devious, #1) Remembering Majyk (The Skazka Chronicles, #1) S.T.A.G.S.

#24in48 readathon

The idea is simple – you have 48 hours (January 27-28) . Read for at least 24 hours during that time for glory! In the last edition of this readathon I succeeded, so I’m hoping this time I will too!

And that’s not all – there are year-long challenges I will be participating, as well as my Goodreads challenge, which I’ve set at 200!

I’ll also be participating in some book read-alongs like the one for the Shadowhunters series, and the one for the Shatter Me series, and only my own personal (informal) reread for the Hollows series, which you can join me at #HollowsReread.

What are your goals for the year? What are you planning to read in January? Tell me in the comments!

  1. I’m half cynical and half excited about new year, because I want to think things will get better, but as you say, you can do that any day!
Thank you for mentioning the Shatter Me readathon, I am so excited to read them and discuss them with you! The Shadowhunters one souds great too (I want to catch up with the series), and achievable, since it’s a book per month, but I am reading it with a friend.
Good luck with all of these! I will be seeing you with the bout of books marathon! 🙂

  2. Thank you for mentioning the Shadowhunter Chronicles read-along – I hope you’re going to going to have a lot of fun catching up with the series. Happy reading and all the best for 2018!
