Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish wherein each week bloggers list out their Top Ten. Love is in the air, and I am a little (not much, just slightly) bit of a romantic, so for this Valentine-themed TTT, here I present my OTPs and in some cases, some beautiful quotes between them. Mild spoilers, beware!
Sakura and Syaoran from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles (CLAMP)
Until we can be together again … we wait … and believe!
My first and favorite OTP – they are my dream couple, the very essence of a non-prolematic relationship. But their story is a very tragic one. Childhood friends, but when she comes of age, there is this evil mage who wants to steal her time travelling powers, and in the process ends up scattering her memories across dimensions. Along with an amnesiac Sakura, Syaoran makes a deal with the Dimensional Witch to gain the power to cross space and time, but the price is that of all her memories she regains, she will never remember the ones of him. She falls in love with him again, of course, in the course of their travels, but then there is this huge plot twist, and parts of the story ties in with this earlier serial manga of the authors, Cardcaptor Sakura (yep, THAT Cardcaptors show). Even at the end, they don’t really get a happy ending, but the story continues in a new series called Tsubasa World Chronicles.
Sydney Sage and Adrian Ivashkov from Bloodlines (Richelle Mead)
“The center will hold”
“How do you know?”
“Because we are the center”
Their romance is literally fraught with peril – he is a vampire and she is human-vampire liaison, belonging to a group of people that hate vampires. At first, she is put off by his slacker nature, but then she sees the beauty in his nature, and he sees the brilliance in her. Theirs is a slow burn romance, and when they get together, it is so sweet and cute and adorable, until the moment the aforementioned group kidnaps her to ‘reeducate’ and we get a book full of worry and fear.
Ronan Lynch and Adam Parrish from The Raven Cycle (Maggie Stiefvater)
“Maybe I dreamt you.”
“Thanks for the straight teeth, then.”
Okay, technically they are not canon, but Adam is damn aware of Ronan’s feelings for him. Both of them broken creatures, one from death and one from abuse and linked to a magical forest – The Dreamer and The Magician. Ronan is not terribly vocal of his feelings – the lighter ones, anyway – and so this couple still have a long ways to go, but I am so invested in them. Adam was first interested in Blue, who is in love with Gansey – but the true love of this series is the whole gang – they are so in love with each other, despite the fact that sometimes they get on each others’ nerves.
Karou and Akiva from Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Laini Taylor)
Your soul sings to mine.
My soul is yours, and it always will be, in any world.
No matter what happens. I need you to remember that I love you.
It is literally Romeo and Juliet in the start for these two – both on the other sides of a centuries long rift between two species. She dies and is reborn as a human, Karou, and even then fate places them apart on different sides of the battle. It doesn’t help that he had a hand in the genocide of her people, so it was tough going for about sometime, but Laini Taylor keeps us entertained in a beautiful and magical world of connected universes, and good devils and terrible angels.
Sam Cortland and Celaena Sardothien from Throne of Glass (Sarah J Maas)
“She would tuck Sam into her heart, a bright light for her to take out whenever things were darkest.”
There is something so beautiful about young love between two assassins who have been childhood friends. So sad that this wasn’t even part of the main series, and their love was cut short so ruthlessly. That is one character death I never got over.
