Excerpt:

Lil stood firm, sword-in-hand, staring at the beast as it flew directly at her. “How do I kill it?” She raised the sword above her head with two hands.

Hudson glanced at her. “With what we taught you. The dragon is no different than a man.”

“It has wings and is flying at me. I’d say it’s different!”

My review

Conceptually, Orenda was interesting with it’s parallel worlds-meets-magic premise. Lil and Willow are doppelgangers living in alternate worlds, one normal as ours and the other filled with magic. When Lil mistakenly travels to Orenda, it causes her best friend Bray to follow her there, cascading into a set of events that enable a powerful sorceress to get access to the magic of travelling between realms. The feel of the book was mostly fantasy, with fae, dragons and evil sorceresses strewn across the plot. The story had mettle, and I was surprised by this refreshing take on the genre by the author. The characters feel better defined and I enjoyed the mulitple POVs – it gave dimension to the story. The writing, too, is quite better than her previous Aberrant series. Plot inconsistencies were also nearly non-existent, which made me breathe a sigh of relief. I wish more effort would have been taken to set up the world of Orenda, though, as the book is too short to explain it. The world is nearly technologically competent as ours but has no communication or broadcast devices like TV or phones; however, it has cars and planes (don’t planes need to communicate, by the way?). I was also a little stumped as far the love triangle was concerned – was it there or not or did I imagine it? Pacing was a bit too fast for my liking too, and I hope more effort is given to properly develop the plot in the next book. This had a strong start and I look forward to the next.
