Review: Blue Exorcist, Vol. 1

Blue Exorcist, Vol. 1
Blue Exorcist, Vol. 1 by Kazue Kato
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Raised by Father Fujimoto, a famous exorcist, Rin Okumura never knew his real father. One day a fateful argument with Father Fujimoto forces Rin to face a terrible truth – the blood of the demon lord Satan runs in Rin’s veins! Rin swears to defeat Satan, but doing that means entering the mysterious True Cross Academy and becoming an exorcist himself. Can Rin fight demons and keep his infernal bloodline a secret? It won’t be easy, especially when drawing his father’s sword releases the demonic power within him!

The Antichrist as an exorcist? Now that I had to read! I was thinking of starting with this manga (and the anime) for some months and glad I got a chance to do so. Firstly, the artwork of the manga was really amazing – the characters drawn so beautifully but what was more magnificent was the backgrounds, in particular the True Cross Academy. The story was quite interesting too – twin brothers, one of them the son of Satan. Rin and Yukio have this interesting relation – Yukio is what he is because of Rin but Rin lacks awareness about his own or his brother’s identity. How Rin is going to survive in Exorcist cram school is going to be quite interesting. The manga had good attention to detail, like the hierarchy of demons and the big hint about the President’s real nature (with a name like that). Though there were only 3 chapters, a lot of excitement and story was packed into this volume, and it was engaging.

Received a review copy from Viz Media through Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review
